22 DAYS SELF DRIVE OVERLAND TOUR SOUTH AFRICA
Day 1 Johannesburg
Arrive in Johannesburg. You will be met by a representative of Kea who will assist with your transfer to the Kea depot in Johannesburg. Pick up your rental camper/4x4 and self drive to Somerset Guesthouse, situated in Kempton Park. Stay at Somerset for one night on a bed and breakfast basis.
Day 2 Johannesburg – Blydepoort
After breakfast, depart in an eastern direction, from Johannesburg to the Mpumalanga Province. You will spend the night in Blydepoort on the camp site of Aventura Blydepoort. This camp site is situated in the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. We suggest you do some shopping in one of the bigger towns on your way to Blydepoort, since Aventura Blydepoort only has a small shop.
Day 3 Kruger National Park
After breakfast, drive to the world famous Kruger National Park. You will have enough time throughout the day to drive over tarseal and dirt roads to try and spot the many wild animals, including the Big Five, that live in this centuries-old reserve.
Day 4 Kruger National Park
You will have another day in the Kruger National Park to explore even more areas of this enormous reserve. We suggest you plan a route through the park for the whole day and make a nice “braai” in the afternoon. Make sure you are back at the campsite before gate closing times.
Day 5 Kruger National Park
Bring along your binoculars and camera to spot the game for the last day in the Kruger National Park.
Optional day 4 and 5
You can change the last two days in the Kruger National Park into a two night stay in either Nkorho Bush Lodge or Pungwe Tented Safari Camp (safari lodges in Sabi Sands Game Reserve and Manyeleti Game Reserve). (Please request a quotation)
Day 6 Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary
After breakfast, leave the Kruger National Park, heading south through the Malelane gate on your way to Pigg's Peak, the Swaziland border. In Swaziland, drive via Mbabane to the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary.
Day 7 Mkuze Game Reserve
This morning you will head for the southern Swaziland border on your way to Kwazulu Natal. If your rented vehicle is a 4x4, there are a few nice 4x4 trials to drive in Mkuze, where you will spend the night on the campsite.
Day 8 Mkuze Game Reserve
Today you will spend the whole day in Mkuze's reserve. You can either spend the day relaxing or drive around to explore nature and game.
Day 9 Cape Vidal
Today head for the southern part of the St. Lucia Wetland Park, where you will camp on Cape Vidal's campsite, situated in the middle of the Indian Ocean dunes.
Day 10 Cape Vidal
Today is free to do whatever you like in the St. Lucia Wetland Park. Several boat tours are available to view crocks and hippos. Alternatively you may wish to go for a swim or try a spot of deep-sea fishing.
Day 11 Dolphin Coast
Today drive from St Lucia along the Dolphin Coast to the Tugela Mouth Resort, situated on the coast 90 kilometers north of Durban.
Day 12 Injisuthi Campsite in Southern Drakensberg
After breakfast, drive to and through the Drakensberg to the Injisuthi campsite. Surrounded by Cathin Peak, Monks Owl and Champagne Cattle this park is one of the smaller ones, without the many tourists. There is a small shop for basic supplies at the camp.
Day 13 Kokstad
After breakfast, leave the Drakensberg and head south to Kokstad. You'll be spending the night on the Stoneybrook Ranch campsite, just 12.5 kilometres out of this small village.
Day 14 – East London
This morning depart Kokstad and drive to East London. This will only be a one night stopover as the drive from Kokstad to Addo is too long to do comfortably in one day. Spend one night at Areena Riverside Resort in East London on a campsite (self-catering basis).
Day 15 Addo Elephant National Park
After breakfast head for the Addo Elephant National Park. You will spend the night on the Addo Elephants Campsite, where you can buy groceries in a small shop or dine in the restaurant.
Day 16 Tsitsikamma National Park
From Addo Elephant Park, drive to the south coast of South Africa to the Tsitsikamma National Park. Camp on the campsite there, where you will find a restaurant and a small shop.
Day 17 Wilderness National Park
This morning head for the Wilderness National Park, a charming world of lakes, rivers, fens, estuaries and beaches which gently unfold against a backdrop of lush forest and lofty mountains. Spend the night on the park's campsite.
Day 18 Oudtshoorn
Today head for the ostrich capital of South Africa, Oudtshoorn. Miles before you enter Oudtshoorn, you will see huge fields full of these funny looking big birds, whose meat is very healthy. Stay on Oudtshoorn's campsite, near the Cango Caves. You will find shops and restaurants in the city.
Day 19 Winelands
Today drive the last part of the world famous Garden Route, which will lead you into the winelands of South Africa. Camp surrounded by beautiful vineyards and stunning views.
Day 20 Cape Town
